The Birthday Freebie Index: What 819 Birthday Freebies Are Actually Worth

Birthday freebies get written about constantly, but almost always as a list. Nobody has measured them. So we did.

The Birthday Freebie Index is our running census of every birthday offer we can find from a US brand. As of September 2026 it covers 819 brands. We were able to put a dollar figure on most of them, and those add up to $8,697 of free food, drink and product.

Here is what the data says.

Key findings

  • Across the 819 brands we track, the offers we could price are worth $8,697 in total.
  • The average birthday freebie is worth $11.46. The median is $10, so a typical offer sits close to the average and the field is not badly skewed by outliers.
  • Beauty offers are worth 3x Desserts & Sweets offers ($21.92 versus $7.41 on average), despite Desserts & Sweets being the far more crowded category.
  • 12% of birthday freebies are worth $20 or more. 6% are worth under $5.
  • 72% of offers (590 of 819) are available nationwide rather than being limited to a region.

The average birthday freebie is worth $11.46

Across every offer we were able to price, the mean value is $11.46 and the median is $10. The closeness of those two numbers matters: it means the category is not a handful of blockbuster offers propping up a long tail of worthless coupons. A typical birthday freebie really is worth about ten dollars.

Not all categories are equal

This is the finding that surprised us most. The gap between the most and least generous categories is close to 3x.

Desserts & Sweets175$7.41

Brands can sit in more than one category, so these counts overlap and add up to more than the catalog itself.

Beauty is one of the smallest categories in the catalog and one of the most valuable per offer, at $21.92. Desserts & Sweets is one of the largest and the least valuable, at $7.41.

The practical implication for anyone working through a birthday list: the free dessert offers are the ones everybody signs up for, and they are worth the least. The beauty counter samples and retail credits take the same few minutes to claim and are worth several times more.

Methodology

We maintain the catalog behind Birthday Catalog, which tracks birthday offers from US brands. Every entry is recorded from a first-party source: the brand's own loyalty terms, its app, or a birthday email received in a test account.

Values are the estimated retail price of the item the brand gives you, recorded per brand at the time the entry was written or last reviewed. Where a brand states a range (a free entree "worth $8 to $14"), we record both ends. The aggregate figures in this study use the upper bound, so they describe the best case. The ranking below instead orders brands by the midpoint of their range, so that a wide "$5 to $40" offer does not outrank a guaranteed $40 one.

What is counted: 759 of 819 published brands, being those whose offer carries a fixed retail value.

What is not counted: 60 brands whose birthday offer is a percentage discount, a points multiplier, or a reward that scales with what you spend. "20% off your birthday purchase" has no fixed value, so assigning one would be a guess. Those brands are excluded from every dollar figure above rather than estimated, which means $8,697 understates the true total.

Known limitations. This is the first edition, so it is a snapshot rather than a trend: we cannot yet report how many brands discontinued their birthday programs year over year. That comparison arrives with the 2027 edition, for which this data is the baseline. Offers also change constantly, and a figure recorded today may be wrong in six months.
